US, EU Want to Hide Information on Real Situation in Crimea

TEHRAN (defapress)- The West is doing its utmost to conceal information about the real situation in Crimea from the rest of the world because it is afraid that the peninsula will be recognized as Russia’s territory, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on her Facebook page on Sunday.

US, EU Want to Hide Information on Real Situation in CrimeaEarlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the situation with recognizing Crimea as part of Russia differed from acknowledging Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights. According to him, what US President Donald Trump did is to "recognize the reality on the ground". Pompeo stressed that Washington seeks to work on Middle East stability, noting that "America is a force for good in the region" and its intentions are noble, TASS reported.

"That’s why Washington and Brussels are doing everything so that the world won’t learn about the real situation in Crimea, otherwise the recognition will be automatic as follows from the Secretary of State’s logic. We understood everything and we will correct our information strategy. Thank you, Mr. Pompeo," Zakharova said.

"And as for memory about the US good forces in the region and Washington’s nobility, there are hundreds of thousands of graves and places of mass burial in Iraq, Libya, Syria and other regional states," the diplomat noted.

Trump tweeted on Thursday that after 52 years it’s time for the US to fully recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of strategic and security importance for it. Russia, Germany, Iran, Syria, France, UK and others condemned such unilateral steps.

The Golan Heights, which belonged to Syria since 1944, were seized by Israel during the six-day war in 1967. In 1981, the Israeli parliament passed a law to unilaterally declare sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The UN Security Council declared the annexation null and void in its Resolution 497 of December 1981.
